Blake Snell and Dodgers reportedly agree to a 5-year, 2 million contract

Blake Snell has agreed to a five-year, $182 million contract with the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, according to a person with direct knowledge of the negotiations.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday evening on condition of anonymity because the deal is contingent on a successful physical exam.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner personally spread the news by posting a photo of himself in a Dodgers uniform – No. 7 – on social media.

ESPN first reported the details of his contract.

Snell would join two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani in a star-studded rotation, giving the Dodgers their first mega-deal of this offseason after Ohtani received a 10-year, $700 million contract last winter.

Ohtani hasn’t pitched this year while recovering from elbow surgery. He won his third MVP award, the first in the National League, after a great season exclusively as a designated hitter.

After being down to three healthy starters heading into the postseason, Los Angeles overcame a series of injuries to its scheduled rotation to win its second World Series title in five years.

Right-handers Jack Flaherty and Walker Buehler then became free agents this fall, creating more holes in the Dodgers’ roster. But the addition of Snell would fill a big spot at the top with a legitimate ace.

Snell’s average salary of $36.4 million would be the fifth-highest among active deals next year, behind New York Yankees outfielder Ohtani ($70 million), Philadelphia pitcher Zack Wheeler ($42 million). Aaron Judge ($40 million) and Texas pitcher Jacob deGrom ($37). Million). Among expired contracts, it was also surpassed by pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander (both $43.33 million) on deals with the New York Mets.

Earlier this month, Snell opted out of his contract with San Francisco to become a free agent for the second straight offseason after his lone year with the Giants was marred by injuries.

The left-hander agreed to a two-year, $62 million contract in March that includes a $17 million signing bonus payable Jan. 15, 2026, a $15 million salary for 2024 and a $30 million salary. 2025 dollars, including $15 million, have been deferred and are payable on July 1, 2027.

Snell, who turns 32 next week, was 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 20 starts this year and threw a no-hitter against Cincinnati on Aug. 2 for one of just 16 individual shutouts in the majors Leagues this season. He had 145 strikeouts and 44 walks in 104 innings.

He was sidelined between April 19 and May 22 with a left adductor muscle strain and between June 2 and July 9 with a left groin strain.

Snell won Cy Young Awards with Tampa Bay in 2018 and San Diego in 2023. He is 76-58 with a 3.19 ERA in nine seasons with the Rays (2016-20), Padres (2021-23) and Giants.

Because he declined a qualifying offer from San Diego last November, the Giants were ineligible to make another offer to Snell and will not receive any draft pick compensation.
