The Duke Blue Devils recovered from an early hole against the No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks on Tuesday night, but freshman superstar Cooper Flagg and his teammates couldn’t close the deal due to a trajectory-changing upset.

Kansas scored 16 of the game’s first 19 points after making six of its first seven floor shots, including three three-pointers in the first 4:11 of the game.

Although Flagg only scored two points in the first half thanks to some consistent double teams, the Blue Devils managed a 16-4 run late in the first half to tie the game. Tyrese Proctor made five of his first six 3-pointers, and senior forward Maliq Brown continually knocked the ball away in a game he finished with four steals.

However, five-star freshman Kon Knueppel couldn’t find a gap in the Kansas defense for a crucial turnover in the final five seconds, allowing the Jayhawks to build a three-point lead. When Knueppel’s final gasp escaped the ring, his eighth miss in eight 3-point attempts, the Blue Devils walked away with their second tally in the loss column.
