Taylor Sheridan, aka the hardest working man in the crime-based press, just launched a new show last week, Landman, starring Billy Bob Thornton and Ali Larter. Here is the summary:

“In the heart of Texas, bullies and billionaires are trying to get rich quick in the oil industry; “Tommy Norris, a struggling executive, tries to get his company to the top during the fuel boom.”

So this time it’s not about the livestock industry, but about the oil industry, which is of course ready to investigate corruption and all sorts of other crimes. Probably murder at some point, if I had to guess given Sheridan’s history.

Interestingly, the series is doing better than Yellowstone’s first season debut in 2018. Critics didn’t agree at the time, as the series only managed a score of 58% on Rotten Tomatoes. Instead, Landman came in at 74% when published here. However, that’s less than the other four seasons of Yellowstone currently released. Ratings are generally at 66%, but are still higher than the 40% that Yellowstone season 5 currently has, as fans disagree with the current direction in the final episodes without Kevin Costner.

Sheridan has created or produced a staggering amount of content for Paramount at this point, including “Yellowstone,” one of the most popular series in America, performing particularly well on linear television at a time when that is rare. But in addition to Yellowstone and some of its spin-offs, he is also behind series like Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown and Lioness. And now, Landman. Overall, I think he’s done about a dozen shows over the last few years where he’s been involved in one way or another.

It is important to note that all of these shows are on Paramount Plus aside from that Yellowstone, as this show is tied to a deal with NBC and Peacock until 2025. But Paramount has now built a huge stack of mostly very solid Taylor Sheridan content that makes up the bulk of its successful programming on the service. It’s hard to really remember anything from him that was truly a bomb, because even if not everything is a new Yellowstone, most of these series are generally well-received by critics and fans and have been renewed for multiple seasons.

Landman taking on Billy Bob Thornton is a huge success as he is such a talented actor and would fit right into this type of storyline. I’ll take a look at it when I get a chance.
