Daniel Jones has a new home.

The now-former Giants quarterback plans to sign with the Vikings, less than a week after he was granted his release from Big Blue following a rollercoaster five-and-a-half seasons.

He will at least start on Minnesota’s practice squad with Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens at the top of the team’s depth chart, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday.

Jones, 27, was eligible to sign with a new team on Monday after clearing waivers at 4 p.m. ET.

It’s been a wild week for Jones, who was initially benched by the Giants last Monday after a dismal 2-8 start. Fan favorite Tommy DeVito was then named the starter.

With the Giants also adding Tim Boyle to the practice squad, Jones was demoted to fourth-string quarterback and requested his release on Friday.

“The opportunity to play for the Giants was truly a dream come true,” Jones said in a prepared statement Thursday.

“…There were some great times, but of course we all wish there had been more of them.

“I take full responsibility for not getting more wins. Nobody wanted to win these games worse than me. I gave it everything I had.”

The sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Jones posted a 22-44-1 record as a starter and surprisingly led the Giants to the playoffs in 2022.

He was rewarded with a four-year contract extension worth $160 million in the 2023 offseason.

The Giants still owe most of the remaining $11.83 million on Jones’ contract because he claimed waivers.

They will receive about $437,500 in savings because Jones’ contract contained offset language, meaning his new team owes him the seven-week prorated amount of the minimum annual salary for his experience ($1.125 million).

However, if Jones is injured during the game, the Giants will not have to cover the $23 million guarantee in his 2025 contract.

The fear of activating that clause – and increasing the cost of Jones’ postseason cut from $22.2 million to $45.2 million – is why Jones is being penalized for his play by the Bench (3-13 in his last 16 starts) changed. to the fourth string player who doesn’t practice.

Jones reportedly drew interest from teams not in the playoffs, where he might have seen the field sooner, but that was a smart risk not to be taken before free agency.

Having him struggle in a secondary situation with a poor roster and learning the offense on the fly could have diminished his value.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell expected there would be “a lot of league-wide interest” in Jones.

“I would like to pay great respect to Daniel Jones as a player and a person,” said O’Connell. “I’ve been a fan of Daniel for a long time and I hope wherever his next stop takes him, it’s a good opportunity for him.”

The Vikings, led by former Jets quarterback Darnold, are off to a 9-2 start in Week 13.

As for Jones’ former team, the Giants were absent Sunday as they suffered a 30-7 loss to the Buccaneers.

DeVito completed 21 of 31 for 189 yards and zero touchdowns. He was also fired four times.

Jones’ former teammates, including rookie receiver Malik Nabers, called the team’s performance “smooth as hell.”
