Aston Villa player ratings vs Juventus: Here’s why Emiliano Martinez is one of the best! Breathtaking save by the world champion goalkeeper brings a valuable Champions League point – but the late winning goal is controversial

The Kopa Trophy winner presented his award as the world’s best goalkeeper before the game and showed why he won the award as Villa drew 0-0 with Juve.

Aston Villa were denied a famous win over Juventus by a controversial refereeing decision but were thanks to goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez’s brilliance against the Italian giants.

It took 36 minutes for both teams to open up a big lead, but Ollie Watkins was denied by Michele Di Gregorio after being sent on goal.

And just before half-time the hosts were only a few centimeters away from the lead, but Lucas Digne’s free kick hit the crossbar.

After an hour and a tense, delicate opening period to half-time, Francisco Conceicao was stunningly denied by Emiliano Martinez, the Argentine goalkeeper, whose point-blank header was saved from the bottom corner.

Moments later, at the other end, John McGinn saw a try cleared off the line as the contest suddenly gained momentum.

And Morgan Rogers thought he had won the game with a fine finish in stoppage time after Diego Carlos Di Gregorio challenged, but the VAR disallowed the goal for a foul on the stopper in chaotic final scenes.
