Family members of a man killed in shooting on I-80 are speaking out

CHICAGO – Family members of a man who was fatally shot on I-80 in New Lenox Monday night said they were in shock and disbelief.

Two Illinois State Police (ISP) troopers knocked on Lenora Clayton’s door Monday evening and informed her that her son had been killed in a shooting on I-80 West near the entrance to I-355.

“I couldn’t believe it, but I still believe it. I feel like I’m just in a fog, I don’t believe it, but still he’s not here,” Lenora said.

Officials told family members of 30-year-old Leniere Clayton that the shooting appeared to be the result of a road rage incident and that Leniere appeared to have driven off the road.

“I told us it appears to be a road rage incident. This Leniere looked like he had been driven away, like on the main street or whatever. That both drivers got out of their vehicles and he was shot.

SkyCam 9 was over the scene after the incident and spotted Leniere’s dark Honda Civic and the other person’s SUV, both of which had crashed into the median.

“It’s just senseless and random and disturbing because it just doesn’t make sense,” said Leniere’s sister Mia Clayton.

Mia described Leniere as a funny and kind man.

“Nobody had anything bad to say about him. He loved to dance, he was just a good guy,” Mia said.

After the shooting, authorities arrested an important person and Lenora said she wished she could talk to them and forgive them.

“I forgive you that I and he were freed,” said Lenora. “My son is still with me in my heart. That’s why I want him to take this message for me and live with it so that he can change his life.
