Journalist Dan Rather’s wife, artist Jean Rather, dies at the age of 89

Artist Jean Rather, wife of journalist Dan Rather, has died at the age of 89. Her death was announced on Dan Rather’s Facebook page. “Today is the saddest day for Dan and the extended Rather family. Jean Rather, Dan’s wife, “We passed away early this morning at their home in Austin, Texas,” reads the post, written by friends of Dan. “She had been in hospice care for some time, but the news still comes as a shock to those of us who knew and loved her.” The post said Jean Rather’s cause of death was cancer. Jean Rather had strong ties to Texas. She was born in Smithville, spent her entire childhood in the Lonestar State and met her husband Dan at a radio station in Houston. “Jean has been a steadfast counselor through every storm and a true Texan of courage,” the Facebook post said. “She never forgot where she came from, never lost her Texas roots and never wavered from her fierce independence and endless creativity.” During their 67-year marriage, the couple lived in and outside of Texas, including Dallas, Washington DC, London and New York City.While Dan Rather had a successful career as a journalist and anchor for CBS Evening News, Jean Rather was also successful as an artist in her own right. “Although always humble, Jean was also a very accomplished artist. Her paintings and collages have been featured in galleries and private collections throughout the United States,” the post reads. She was a painter for eight years and was vice chair of the New York City Art Commission. According to the post, Jean Rather also served on several nonprofit boards, including the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, UT Press and the Harry Ransom Center. Jean Rather is survived by her husband, son, daughter and two grandchildren.
