DENVER (KDVR) – The No. 1 television show on Netflix, “Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?” premiered Monday, and the Boulder Police Department has since commented on the case.

The docuseries debuted on Netflix on November 25 as an investigative series about JonBenét Ramsey, a six-year-old who was reported missing from her Boulder home on December 26, 1996. The beauty pageant star’s family later found her dead in the basement of the house.

A day after the series aired, police released an “annual update” on While the update typically occurs in December, the department said this update came early “due to increased attention to this investigation.”

Boulder PD speaks on the JonBenét Ramsey case

While the department never specifically mentioned the documentaries, the post on X referenced many of the allegations made in the three-part documentary series.

The documentation ultimately points to many mistakes made in the investigation, including faulty DNA evidence and false accusations from family members. The series alludes to many possible suspects near the end of the show and steps that should be taken next in the investigation.

“The assertion that there is viable evidence and leads that we are not pursuing – including DNA testing – is completely false,” the department said on X.

While this claim has been made by many over the years, the department is addressing another claim made by the series.

In Episode 3, the series stated, “In 2023, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation assembled a panel of experts to conduct a cold case review of the murder of JonBenét Ramsey.”

However, Boulder police said otherwise.

“In addition, it was the Boulder Police Department – not the Colorado Bureau of Investigation – that convened the Cold Case Review Panel in December 2023 as part of its investigative efforts,” the department said on X.

Boulder police also released a five-minute video on an update on the case, in which Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said the department welcomes any documentary that brings attention to the case and hopes the recent attention will lead to more leads.

Redfearn also said they have had an open dialogue with the family and remain open-minded about the case. Redfearn also gave an update on the current status of the cold case.

Updates on the JonBenét Ramsey case

As for the current investigation, Redfearn said the department is still working through the leads the department’s cold case panel gave last year, but as with any major investigation, police can no longer share anything with the public without the case to endanger.

“Over the last 30 years, the way law enforcement works has changed significantly. There are a number of things that people have pointed out over the years that could have been done better, and we admit that that is true. “It is important to emphasize, however, that while we cannot return to that terrible day in 1997, our goal is to find JonBenét Ramsey’s murderer,” Redfearn said.

The department said the murder case can be reviewed on its website. Anyone with information about the case can contact detectives at [email protected] or call the Boulder Police tip line at 303-441-1974.
