The Bruins goalkeeper rewards the new coach’s trust in him

After Joonas Korpisalo continued a great November with a shutout in the Bruins’ win over Utah on Thursday, no one would have blamed new coach Joe Sacco for putting him back in the starting lineup on Saturday in Detroit.

But Sacco handed the scoring over to Jeremy Swayman, who struggled to get back to the level of play that earned him an eight-year, $66 million contract.

Swayman rewarded his new coach for the decision.

Swayman faced just 19 shots in the Bruins’ 2-1 win over the Red Wings in Detroit, but he stopped 18 of them and looked good doing it as Boston won its second straight game.

“I was happy,” Sacco said. “I was pleased with his answer this evening. I’m sure he’s starting to feel better. It’s only a matter of time before he finds his groove permanently.”

Swayman, who came into the game with a 5-7-2 record and a 3.47 GAA and .884 save percentage, said he took a simple approach to getting back to his previous level.

“I just want to do my job, one save at a time, get good reads, make the first save and put myself in a position to make the second save.

He was more effusive with his teammates.

“It’s really great to see the guys in front of me paying attention to detail at both ends of the ice and being rewarded for it,” he said.
