Washington wins absolutely wildly in Tampa: The Capitals beat the Lightning 5-4

The Washington Capitals quickly traveled from Sunrise to Tampa Bay to face the Lightning on Wednesday in their final game of this two-game road trip. The Lightning are never an easy game, especially when Andrei Vasilevskiy patrols their goal crease.

Brayden Point scored two quick goals to give the home team a 2-0 lead after the first period. Andrew Mangiapane and Aliaksei Protas tied the game with goals in quick succession in the second half. Michael Eyssimont put the Lightning back in the lead in the third period.

Dylan Strome tied the game again, but then Charlie Lindgren scored in the most obvious way you can score yourself. John Carlson tied the game for the third time. Tom Wilson gave the Caps their first lead with 3:26 left in regulation time.

Capitals beat Lightning 5-4!

  • The first period, outside of the first five minutes or so, wasn’t really bad for the Capitals. The Lightning only recorded one high-danger chance in the frame at five-on-five, but Brayden Point took full advantage of it, and then Nikita Kucherov did his usual thing on a power play. It can be very frustrating to play against Tampa Bay when they are at their best, and after Monday’s 8-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche, they appear to be cooking.
  • Washington didn’t really help itself, though. The Capitals had countless missed shots that didn’t even come close to being tested Andrei Vasilevskiy and received two bad penalties. The terrible ice at Amalie Arena didn’t help much either. Puck bad luck happens when you play on a mess full of ruts.
  • According to Monumental Sports Network’s Ryan Billie, this was the first Capitals-Lightning game that did not feature either Alex Ovechkin still Steven Stamkos since March 27, 2004. Tampa Bay won this game 4-1 with goals from Vincent Lecavalier (2), Freddy Modin and Brad Richards. Washington’s only goal was scored by Matt Pettinger and assisted by Trent Whitfield and Roman Tvrdon. Matthew Yeats was the Capitals’ goalkeeper. I literally have no idea who the last three people I just named are.
  • The Capitals were pretty good in the second period and were tied early in the third period until Michael Eyssimont scored with less than a minute left. I think it’s time for Spencer Carbery to maybe stop doing that, even if he’s at the net. Charlie Lindgren should have scored two of the first three goals.
  • Aliaksei Protas scored his first shorthanded goal in his career and tied the game 2-2. The marker was his first point since Alex Ovechkin left Washington’s lineup. The Caps need more from the big professional in this phase without their captain.
  • Lars Eller He was involved in another Capitals goal and provided the first assist Andrew Mangiapane. He’s been pretty flawless since the Capitals reacquired him.
  • The TNT show always makes me miss Joe B and Locker. This evening was no different.
  • I wrote the first point about Lindgren before he did whatever the hell that was in the third paragraph. I don’t even know how to comment on this. However, he has recovered very well, you have to give him that.
  • There was talk on TNT that both Anthony Cirelli and Brandon Hagel could potentially make Team Canada. There was no question of that Dylan Stromes Candidacy. Why? I don’t know. Strome scored the Capitals’ third goal and assisted on the fifth, giving him 31 points (7g, 24a) this season.
  • Huge goal from Tom Wilson. His first since Halloween.

There’s no Joe B or Locker tonight, so here’s your daily dose of Miro.

Next up, the Capitals return home for the first half of back-to-back travel games, facing the New York Islanders in a Friday afternoon game. Happy Thanksgiving!
