Own goal: Charlie Lindgren hits a backhand into his own net to give Brayden Point a bizarre hat-trick

Charlie Lindgren just gave up the most embarrassing goal of his professional career. Let’s just say he pulled A Hagelin.

Shortly after Dylan Strome tied the Capitals and Lightning 3-3 in the third period, Lindgren came out to pass the puck in the left faceoff circle. Feeling the pressure, the Capitals goaltender turned and backhanded the puck into his own net while attempting to deflect the ball to the opposing side.

Sorry to take anything away from you, Steve, but guys, this sucks.

Lindgren’s misplay came when the puck appeared to bounce towards him and he stood on his side, causing him to twist his angle as he tried to knock the puck away.

After the own goal, a visibly upset Lindgren grabbed the puck from the net and cheekily threw it into the Lightning crowd.

The goal was eventually awarded Brayden Pointwhich gave the Lightning forward a hat trick as he was the last player to touch the puck. Point did this while trying to get a clear from Vasilevskiy along the sideboard about 180 feet from Lindgren.

The goal judges took several minutes to review the tape. TNT’s Darren Pang even suggested that he initially thought the goal was Vasilevskiy’s. Tampa fans threw their hats at the next break in the game after Point’s name was announced.

The Capitals somehow managed to overcome Lindgren’s fumble, scoring late goals from John Carlson and Tom Wilson and winning 5-4.
