The Wings' Raymond stays hot with the OT winner against the Flames

Detroit — After scoring two goals in the first 18 games of the season, Lucas Raymond is sending pucks home again just in time for the holidays.

Raymond scored for the fourth straight game on Wednesday, including three game-winners, as the Red Wings beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 in overtime at Little Caesars Arena.

Raymond’s goal came with 1:25 left in overtime, his sixth goal and team-leading 22nd point in 22 games this year.

“Goals rise and fall – whatever,” Raymond said. “But I think if you stick with doing the right things and playing the right way, good things happen.”

Raymond and Michael Rasmussen assisted on Alex DeBrincat’s early goal as the Red Wings’ power play got back on track.

Rasmussen collected a Raymond pass in front of the net, then turned and found DeBrincat on the left side. DeBrincat shot a one-timer, beating goalie Dan Vladar at 6:33. The Farmington Hills native scored his ninth goal of the season.

The Red Wings (10-10-2) entered the game scoreless on their last 10 power plays, a streak that spanned three complete games. DeBrincat’s goal ended the series 32 seconds after Detroit’s first chance Wednesday.

Despite the recent blip, the Red Wings still ranked sixth in the NHL in power play conversions, improving to 28.1% with Wednesday’s two goals.

“It wasn’t like we had to come up with something new,” Raymond said. “It was just a matter of getting back to doing what made it successful.”

Raymond’s goal softened a loss that would have been difficult to swallow. Detroit led for more than 50 minutes until a mistake by Dylan Larkin backfired.

The captain was called for a faceoff violation after using his glove to play the puck late in a 1-0 game.

Connor Gary tied it with 2:48 left, erasing the shutout and forcing Calgary (12-7-4) into overtime. But Raymond’s game-winner gave Red Wings goaltender Cam Talbot his sixth win after making 24 saves.

“You can do one of two things: You can either come out and give them the game back, or you can come out in overtime and get the game winner,” Talbot said. “We did a good job mentally to not let that get us down and get the win.”

The Red Wings have allowed six goals in their last four games.

“We’re showing we can play these games,” Talbot said. “We bent, but most of the night we couldn’t break. I thought if anything we left it to them for most of the game.”

Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde added of low-scoring games: “That’s the reality. It’s about keeping it out of the net.”

In fact, Detroit had the upper hand for most of the second period and outscored the Flames 11-5. However, Vladar stuck to a one-goal game, stopping Vladimir Tarasenko and Jonatan Berggren after back-to-back chances to take the lead after Moritz Seider’s long pass from the boards behind the Calgary net.
