Valeri Nichushkin scored a regulation goal and the only one in a lengthy shootout, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1 on Wednesday night in Denver.

Alexandar Georgiev stopped 18 shots in overtime and hit all five in the shootout, giving Colorado its fourth win in five games.

Pavel Dorofeyev had a goal and Adin Hill made 33 saves and three more in the shootout before Nichushkin defeated him in the fifth round, ending Vegas’ three-game winning streak.

Both goalkeepers were sharp against the best shooters, but Nichushkin managed to convert a goal from Hill to end the game.

The Avalanche announced before the game that Jonathan Drouin is week-to-week with an upper-body injury he suffered in Saturday night’s 7-4 win at Florida. Colorado recalled 22-year-old Chase Bradley, who made his NHL debut on the fourth line.

The Avalanche started overtime on the power play, but Vegas stopped them and the teams played a 4-on-4 game for the first 3:21 of overtime.

Neither team managed a power play in the first two periods, but Cale Makar was given a two-minute minor interference 3:37 into the third period. Vegas’ Alex Pietrangelo suffered a tripping error at 11:10 of the third period.

Both teams had chances in the first half but couldn’t get past either goalkeeper. Nathan MacKinnon had a great chance to score early in the second period, but his shot slipped off Hill’s glove and clipped the crossbar.

The Golden Knights finally broke the stalemate late in the second period. Ivan Barbashev had the puck above the right circle and fed Dorofeev as he skated down the left side. For his 12th goal of the season as a team leader, Dorofeev used stickhandling to reach the end of the circle and fired a shot over Georgiev’s shoulders to make it 1-0 (13:09).

Colorado responded quickly as MacKinnon carried the puck into the Vegas end, but the puck was knocked away. The Golden Knights tried to clear the ball up the middle, but Nichushkin intercepted the ball and laid the ball through Hill for his second goal of the season at 13:42.
