A police chase that began Monday in New Hampshire ended in central Massachusetts.

Derry Police told News 9 the vehicle at the center of the chase was a Mercedes that was stolen from Steven’s Auto Service in Derry, New Hampshire.

Helicopter video of the chase captured by News 9’s sister station WCVB showed police pursuing the vehicle and eventually taking the driver into custody in West Boylston, Massachusetts.

The helicopter video showed the black SUV zigzagging between traffic lanes and the shoulder, speeding past other vehicles. At some point, the SUV crossed a grassy median to reverse direction on one of the highways.

Derry police said they received a call just before 7:30 a.m. Monday about a break-in at a store on West Broadway. Police said someone broke in through a window and allegedly stole cash and the keys to a Mercedes that was missing from the parking lot.

At around 9:15 a.m. a report came in that the Mercedes had been spotted on South Main Street. Derry Police pursued the Mercedes but eventually broke off the pursuit as the vehicle approached Derry Village School.

Massachusetts State Police said the Mercedes was later spotted on Route 2 in Massachusetts. Police began pursuing the vehicle again, at times reaching speeds of 90 miles per hour. The police then broke off the pursuit and used the built-in GPS in the Mercedes to determine its location.

The driver eventually came to a stop in West Boylston, near the Sterling city limits.

Several unmarked vehicles surrounded the Mercedes and officers emerged with guns drawn. The driver behind the wheel of the Mercedes surrendered without incident.

Police later identified the driver as Andrew McInnes, 40, of Methuen, Massachusetts. Family members and police said McInnes suffered from mental health issues.

Derry police said they are working with Massachusetts police to connect the burglary to the driver.

“We are now working with them to determine whether this is who we believe they are and their relationship to the crime we are investigating,” said Derry captain Vern Thomas. “We would deal with theft of a motor vehicle in the burglary and any other charges related to a pursuit that we are involved in, and that would be completely separate from what anyone else would do with their involvement.”

Employees at the store said they could not comment on the theft, but said they had never experienced anything like it in the 15 years they had worked there.
