Why this grocery store CEO says egg prices will “definitely” go down after Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, less than 24 hours until the big turkey day, but prices for staples needed for a complete holiday meal have continued to fall, according to one of the country’s largest grocery chains.

Rodney McMullen, CEO of Kroger, told “Good Morning America” that this is “the third year in a row that you can eat Thanksgiving dinner for less than last year.”

The trend toward lower prices, particularly on holiday fare, has spread across the industry, with major retailers offering affordable options to feed dinner crowds.

Kroger, which operates 2,719 supermarkets in 35 states, has Thanksgiving staples “to feed a family of 10 for less than $50.”

This season, Kroger is once again offering customers an affordable meal without compromising on value, convenience or quality.

And if you haven’t purchased your bird yet, McMullen reminds that “now is a good time to buy” because “turkeys are always cheapest on Thanksgiving.”

Prices of some home foods have risen, particularly eggs, as widespread cases of bird flu have devastated egg-laying flocks, leading to a decline in production and therefore higher prices.

But McMullen said egg prices are “definitely” going down. “It’s just a matter of the chickens coming back after bird flu.”

Despite some recent mass recalls of ingredients like organic carrots, McMullen assured that the products on shelves are safe for consumption.

“I feel very comfortable – the key is whatever it is, you cook it right,” he said. Especially with poultry, you should use a meat thermometer to ensure it is cooked through to avoid foodborne illness.
