Why Jake DeBrusk turned his head to Swivel Vs. Bruins

Why Jake DeBrusk turned his head to Swivel Vs. Bruins

Tuesday night will be an emotional evening for Jake DeBrusk as he steps onto the ice at TD Garden for the first time since leaving the Bruins.

DeBrusk spent seven solid seasons in Boston before finally signing with the Vancouver Canucks in free agency last summer. Tuesday night is his first trip to Boston with a new club, and he knows he’ll have to be on the lookout for teammates seeking retaliation.

A joke, of course. Kind of.

“Honestly, there’s probably a few people that are going to punish me for getting on their nerves so many times,” DeBrusk said with a smile Monday as he met with the media at Canucks practice.

“You never know. I’m not thinking about that, but it’ll be fun to hear some guys chirping at me. It’s definitely a strange situation for myself, but when I say that, I understand that they are doing everything to win and so are we.”

Obviously, the good outweighs any negative for DeBrusk in his return to Boston. The schedule worked out well for the 28-year-old. Vancouver has been free in Ottawa since Saturday evening. That allowed DeBrusk to meet with former Bruins teammates Sunday night, and he planned to do so again Monday night.

DeBrusk’s first season in Vancouver was mixed. DeBrusk has five goals and eight assists in 19 games for Vancouver. However, he had the best game of his season on Saturday evening. The winger scored two goals and provided an assist in a 4-3 win over the Linus Ullmark-led Ottawa Senators.

DeBrusk is hoping for another strong performance in his next reunion on Tuesday night at the Garden.

“I hope so, I’m not going to lie to you,” DeBrusk said Monday when asked if he still has a multi-point game left for the Bruins. “The grapes kind of came and went. I had more success on the road than at home. … Hopefully it continues to be a successful cause.”
