Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. remains hospitalized for a head injury he suffered during a game in October, the school said hours after announcing his death.

The athletic department sent out a revocation on Wednesday regarding the status of Burnett, who was injured in an Oct. 26 game against Alabama State. The second statement said the first news of Burnett’s death came “on Tuesday evening from an immediate family member.”

“Our staff honored the family member’s wishes to inform the A&M community and beyond of this unfortunate incident,” the statement said Wednesday evening. “When we heard from a UAB Hospital representative this afternoon, we learned he was still alive.

“We express our immediate regret for the spread of false information. However, we are very pleased to know that Medrick remains in stable condition.”

A statement on the gofundme.com page about Burnett said Wednesday: “Please pray that this is difficult for him, but we will persevere until the end. “God give us strength to keep the faith.”

The redshirt freshman from Lakewood, California, joined the Alabama A&M team over the summer after beginning his college career at Grambling State.

Burnett played in seven games and made five tackles, including three against Austin Peay.
