Alabama A&M apologizes for incorrectly reporting linebacker’s death and says he is stable

NORMAL, Ala. (WHNT) – An Alabama A&M University athletic department spokesman said a football player who was injured during the Magic City Classic football game is still alive and apologized for an earlier statement that he had died.

Medrick Burnett Jr., a linebacker for the Bulldogs, was carted off the field during the Magic City Classic on Oct. 26 after suffering an injury.

On Wednesday morning, a school spokesman said Burnett died on Nov. 26. A spokesperson later told News 19 they had received incorrect information and that Burnett was alive and in stable condition.

“We are retracting the news of the death of Medrick Burnett Jr., originally shared by an immediate family member on Tuesday evening. Our staff honored the family member’s wishes and notified the A&M community and beyond of this unfortunate incident. When we heard from a UAB Hospital representative this afternoon, we learned he was still alive. “We immediately regret the spread of false information, but are very pleased that Medrick remains in stable condition,” read a new statement sent to News 19 Wednesday evening.

Burnett joined the Bulldog family in the summer of 2024 prior to his redshirt freshman campaign. He was from Lakewood, California, where he attended Mayfield High School.

After graduating from high school, Burnett joined the Grambling State University football program for the 2023 season.

Alabama A&M’s athletic director released the following statement regarding Burnett’s death:

“Today our Bulldog family is heartbroken by the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr.,” said Dr. Paul A. Bryant, Alabama A&M athletics director. “Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; He was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership and compassion left an indelible impression on everyone who knew him. Although words cannot adequately express our sadness, we are humbled by the strength of his family who stood by him throughout this unimaginable ordeal.

We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to Medrick’s parents, siblings and family. We also offer our heartfelt support to his teammates, coaches and the entire Alabama A&M community as they mourn this loss. In this moment of grief, we come together to honor Medrick’s legacy and celebrate the light he brought into our lives. May we all draw strength from one another during this difficult time.

But that statement, which was posted online and emailed to news outlets, has since been removed from AAMU Athletics’ website.

Burnett appeared in seven games this season and recorded a season-best three tackles at Austin Peay.

The arrangements for the memorial service will be announced later.
