Alabama A&M football player “remains alive” after university confirms she released “false information.”

Alabama A&M football player Medrick Burnett Jr., who the university said died Tuesday, “remains alive,” according to a statement from Alabama A&M Sports Information Director Brian Howard. Hours later, WVTM 13 confirmed to Alabama A&M Athletics that Burnett was still alive. “We are retracting the news of Medrick Burnett Jr.’s death, which was originally shared by an immediate family member on Tuesday evening,” Howard said in a statement. “Our staff has honored the family member’s wishes, the A&M community and beyond to inform about this unfortunate incident.” When we heard from a representative of UAB Hospital this afternoon, we learned that he is still alive. We express our immediate regret for spreading false information, but we are very pleased that Medrick remains in stable condition.” Medrick Burnett Jr. is a linebacker in his first season at A&M. That’s according to a statement from Alabama A&M sports information director Brian Howard.

Earlier in the day, sports director Dr. Paul Bryant released a statement saying the “Bulldog family is heartbroken over the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr.”

The university later removed its press release from its website and social media posts.

Hours later, WVTM 13 confirmed to Alabama A&M Athletics that Burnett was still alive.

“We are retracting the news of the death of Medrick Burnett Jr., which was originally shared by an immediate family member on Tuesday evening,” Howard said in a statement. “Our staff honored the family member’s wishes to inform the A&M community and beyond of this unfortunate incident.”

“When we heard from a UAB Hospital representative this afternoon, we learned he was still alive. We express our immediate regret for spreading false information, but are very pleased that Medrick remains in stable condition.”

Medrick Burnett Jr. is a linebacker in his first season at A&M. According to AAMU, he appeared in seven games this season.

He was injured during the Magic City Classic and was carried off the field on a stretcher. He was later taken to hospital for treatment.
