Browns consultant Mike Vrabel offers little insight into his future as an NFL coach

Browns consultant Mike Vrabel offers little insight into his future as an NFL coach

Mike Vrabel didn’t give much insight into his coaching future on Monday evening.

Vrabel participated in the “ManningCast” broadcast of “Monday Night Football” with Eli Manning and Peyton Manning.

Vrabel was hired by the Browns in March after failing to get a new NFL head coaching job following his firing by the Tennessee Titans. His official title with the Browns is coach and recruiter.

Vrabel, an Akron native who played at Walsh Jesuit High School and Ohio State University, told Peyton Manning that he enjoyed his advisory role with the Browns.

“The adjustment was really cool. I enjoyed the Haslam family. I grew up 30 miles south of here. I grew up a Browns fan,” said Vrabel, wearing a quarter-zip Browns shirt.

He dodged a question about which NFL team he would coach next season.

What Vrabel actually does for the Browns is unclear. After working with the team during the week, he stood courtside wearing an earpiece during the Browns’ last two games.

“Vrabes is involved in a lot of what we do,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters this month. “He attends home games, he was able to come to this one. He listens to the conversations with us. He’s a great resource for me on game days Monday through Friday, so he’ll continue to do that.”

There are currently two NFL head coaching positions open. The New Orleans Saints and New York Jets have interim coaches in Darren Rizzi and Jeff Ulbrich, respectively.

There will be plenty of NFL head jobs available this offseason – just maybe not with the Browns. Vrabel is rumored to be in almost every possible position. He is one of the best coaches available alongside Bill Belichick and Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Urban Meyer couldn’t remember who Mike Vrabel was

While Vrabel didn’t reveal much about his next career move, he did share a humorous anecdote about an encounter with former Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer.

While Meyer was coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Vrabel was with the Titans, he didn’t remember his former colleague.

“Yes, I am the head coach of the Titans and I worked for you for two years,” Vrabel said to Meyer.

Vrabel, who was the final guest Monday night, talked mostly about football and Derrick Henry, his Pro Bowl running back when he played for the Tennessee Titans.
