Businesses will be open and closed on Thanksgiving 2024: grocery stores, retailers, Walmart, Target and more

Friends and family will be arriving in a few hours – and you just realized you didn’t buy enough potatoes. Or maybe you burned the cake. Maybe the turkey is still frozen solid.

No panic. Dinner can be salvaged in time, but if you were hoping to do some early Christmas shopping at the same time as the ingredients, it might be a little trickier.

Several grocery chains will be open on Thanksgiving, the most food-centric of all U.S. holidays. Major retailers will be mostly closed, however, as the trend of luring people into starting their Black Friday sales bonanzas before the table has been cleared of Thanksgiving dinner dishes has slowed significantly.

Of course, there are exceptions on both fronts. Some grocers are giving employees time off to spend time with family — and some retailers are staying open in hopes of attracting early risers and people who spill sauce on the tablecloth.

Here’s a look at the stores that will — and won’t — be open on Thanksgiving 2024. As always, keep in mind that hours may vary, so it’s a good idea to call first. And also keep in mind that blue laws in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island prohibit retailers from being open in those states.
