Fans react angrily to performers lip syncing during the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Every year, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade gives fans across the United States a whole host of reasons to attend. The floats, balloons, marching bands and dance groups are cornerstones of the annual event. However, the annual parade wouldn’t be the same without its line-up of star-studded performances. Every year, different artists board floats to perform hits or Christmas classics to the audience. This year was no different. However, fans weren’t so thrilled when they realized the actors were lip-syncing.

Tons of people tuned in to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year and then saw their favorite artists lip-syncing. Some didn’t notice, others didn’t mind and took it all in stride. However, some viewers were so unhappy that they complained on social media.

Angry viewers react to lip syncing during Macy’s Thanksgiving parade

Less than an hour and just two performances into the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the lip-syncing artists. Billy Porter went first, and an audience member quickly called him out.

“IF someone wants to lip-sync on such a HUGE platform (e.g. the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade), you might actually want to LEARN YOUR WORDS!” they tweeted, tagging Porter in the post. “That was TERRIBLE,” they added.

Some viewers had a better sense of humor. “Ah yes, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Where we find out who the worst lip sync celebrities are this year,” one viewer tweeted.

Alicia Keys and the cast of Hell’s Kitchen delivered the second performance of the event. “That’s the word lip sync I’ve ever seen? You got a Tony and an Emmy, come on baby!!’ One viewer tweeted about the outing. “But I love this arrangement,” they added.

One viewer was simply curious. “Is lip syncing required at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade?” they tweeted. Actually it is. Here’s why.

Why artists can’t sing live during the parade

While we can all admit that lip syncing is a little lame, there’s a reason all the artists do it during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The conditions in which they work make it almost impossible to deliver a good live performance. First, there is the screaming crowd lining the parade route. Then there is the possibility that wind or other weather conditions could affect their performance. Additionally, many of them perform on giant parade floats, the sounds of which would likely leak into their microphones during live performances.

In short, performers lip-synch during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to ensure those gathered along the parade route and those watching at home experience the best show possible.
