Five thoughts on Notre Dame men’s basketball’s OT loss to Rutgers

Five thoughts on Notre Dame men’s basketball’s OT loss to Rutgers

Notre Dame men’s basketball lost twice on Tuesday night as its best player was sidelined with an injury and the game ended 85-83, a heartbreaking loss to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

For much of the game it looked like the Irish were in control, but they just couldn’t find enough to push them over the edge. It’s the second loss of the year for Notre Dame, which is now 4-2 heading into Wednesday night’s game against nationally ranked Houston.

We’ve learned a lot about this Notre Dame team, and here are the five that suck the most.

Notre Dame guard Markus Burton (3) takes the ball at the top of the key during a college basketball game against Stonehill College at Purcell Pavilion on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2024, in South Bend.

Nobody wanted to see the Irish star point guard sidelined with an injury. Burton quickly left the courtroom and returned in street clothes, signaling that he was done for the night. It was reported that he would seek medical attention after tonight’s game. With a rare back-to-back game tomorrow night, expect not to see him on the court against Houston as we wait for an update.

It needs to be better controlled. You can’t always achieve 100%, which leads to stupid mistakes and fouls, which Shrewsberry seemed a bit upset about towards the end of the first half after a foul was caused in a big commotion. That’s the type of intensity that was missing against Elon but came to the fore tonight. It just needs to be unleashed at the right moment.

Notre Dame guard Matt Allocco speaks to the media during Notre Dame men’s basketball media day at Purcell Pavilion on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024, in South Bend.

The transfer had his best game in the Blue and Gold since transferring from Princeton, and not just because he scored. That was due to his aggressiveness on the glass, as the senior grabbed 10 rebounds and 24 points, a double-double with 5 assists. It was a nice story going up against his former teammate Zach Martini, but the Irish would have preferred a win and a heroic tale for Allocco.

Notre Dame guard Braeden Shrewsberry (11) shoots a three-point shot during a college basketball game against Stonehill College at Purcell Pavilion on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2024, in South Bend.

With Burton out for the foreseeable future, Shrewsberry will have to take on this team. He led in scoring but had no assists and made just 30% of his shots on the night, going 3 of 13 from three-point range. He needs to get a lot better in the coming games as the offense relies on him to save them.

He was a one-man team that destroyed the Irish as he scored 36 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and had 6 assists. Harper also did this with just one turnover, showing that he is one of the best players in the country. Expect his name to be called early in the NBA draft as he looks to continue the Harper family’s tradition of playing at the highest level.
