Google Gemini’s Spotify extension is now rolling out

Google Gemini’s Spotify extension is now rolling out

Key insights

  • New Gemini extensions like Spotify offer expanded functionality through voice commands.
  • To set it up, you’ll need to give Google access to Spotify and have a Premium subscription for some features to work.
  • The extension is only available in English in the main Gemini app, not on Gemini in Messages, the web, or iPhone.

Since Google made Gemini the new and official replacement for Assistant, new features have continued to be added. In addition to the usual conversational utility that characterizes AI, we’ve recently seen plans to also rearrange the menu items in Gemini. However, the AI is also getting four new features in the form of extensions soon, and the one for Spotify has just started rolling out.

New Gemini extensions keep rolling out that bring Google Assistant closer to where it left off. They work just like browser extensions and improve functionality when enabled. Following utility extensions earlier this month, Google has now started rolling out the Spotify extension (via 9to5Google).

As the name suggests, this gives you complete control over simple Spotify app actions via the Gemini Assistant. You can use voice commands to start playing a specific song or podcast, find a playlist or radio, and even search for a song by its lyrics. Instead of using your voice, you could also type instructions for Spotify, but it might be quicker to do this effort directly in the app.

However, if this is your first time trying this, you’ll need to set up the integration by giving Google access to your Spotify account.

There are a few caveats

This new Gemini extension makes voice-controlled Spotify fun to enjoy, but it can’t do everything and it’s still not available everywhere. Google is rolling it out now, but it only works if your Gemini language is set to English. Additionally, you need a Spotify Premium subscription to play certain songs.

It’s also worth noting that the new extension only applies to the main Gemini app and doesn’t work for Gemini in Messages or Gemini for the web and iPhone. On Android, Gemini may also not be using Spotify. This is probably because you have connected multiple music apps via extensions and haven’t specified which one you want to use.

With the Spotify extension now rolling out, we can’t wait for the other extensions that Google recently announced.
