How do Chucky Hepburn, AJ Storr and other Wisconsin transfers play?

Wisconsin Basketball has to be more than happy with its use of the transfer portal in 2024. It brought in guard John Tonje, who is the team’s top scorer in the first seven games and has already shown a record performance.

But the portal goes both ways.

And the Badgers lost two key performers from the NCAA tournament team to the transfer portal: starting guards Chucky Hepburn (Louisville) and AJ Storr (Kansas), along with a handful of other players.

That’s the nature of college basketball in 2024.

Hepburn started every game during his three-year run with the program, while Storr was the Badgers’ leading scorer in his only season in Madison after transferring from St. John’s.

Here’s a look at how they’ve fared with their new teams in the first few weeks of the season and what the others who transferred from Wisconsin are up to:

How is Chucky Hepburn doing in Louisville?

Hepburn, a senior point guard who started 103 games for the Badgers, has started all four games for the Cardinals (3-1). He’s averaging 10.5 points, fourth-best on a balanced offensive team with five players averaging double-digit points.

Hepburn also leads Louisville in assists (4.0 per game), steals (3.0) and turnovers (2.8). He shoots 45% overall from the field and 27% on three-pointers. His best game was a 16-point, five-assist performance in a 100-68 win Nov. 19 over Bellarmine.

How is AJ Storr doing in Kansas?

Storr, a junior guard who played at Wisconsin just last season, comes off the bench to average 19.4 minutes per game for the No. 1 Jayhawks (5-0).

He is averaging 9.4 points per game on 49% shooting and 40% from three-point range. In his best game, he scored 16 points in a win over Oakland on November 16th. The Jayhawks have a big game against No. 11 Duke on Tuesday night.

How is Connor Essegian doing at Nebraska?

Essegian, a junior guard who spent two seasons with the Badgers, is averaging 10.4 points in 19.2 minutes per game for the Cornhuskers (4-1).

After coming off the bench in four games and starting one, he has an overall shooting percentage of 44% and a shooting percentage of 36% on three-pointers. He also averages 2.6 rebounds per game. His best game was his last — 15 points in 22 minutes as the Cornhuskers beat No. 14 Creighton 74-63.

Wisconsin plays at Nebraska on January 26th.

How is Gus Yalden doing at Seton Hall?

Yalden, a second-year forward from Appleton who didn’t play for the Badgers last season, is averaging 2.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in 10.1 minutes per game for the Pirates (4-3).

His best game came on November 9 against Fordham, when he scored six points and grabbed five rebounds in 10 minutes in a 57-56 loss.

How is Isaac Lindsey doing at South Dakota State?

Lindsey, a senior guard from Mineral Point, was a reserve with the Badgers for three seasons after transferring from UNLV as a redshirt freshman. He averaged 4.3 points in 16.3 minutes per game for the Jackrabbits (5-2).

How is Ross Candelino doing at Lipscomb?

Candelino, a junior guard, was a reserve player for the Badgers the past two seasons and redshirted last season. He is averaging 1 point and 3.7 minutes in three games for Division I Lipscomb (3-4), which plays in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

How is Luke Haertle doing at Winona State?

Haertle, a sophomore guard from Hartland and Lake County Lutheran High School, was a backup player for the Badgers last season. He leads the Division II Warriors (4-1) with 21 points per game.

How are former Badgers who transferred before last season doing?

Jordan Davis, Illinois State: Jordan Davis, the twin brother of former Badger Johnny Davis, now with the Washington Wizards, is in his second season with the Redbirds after three in Madison. A veteran guard, he comes off the bench and averaged 3.8 points in 19.8 minutes.
