MAUI – After a convincing victory in the opening round of the 2024 Maui Invitational, the Michigan State Spartans are looking to play for a championship this season. However, they have to prevail against a strong Memphis Tigers team on Tuesday.

The Spartans started their tournament in Hawaii with a strong performance against the Colorado Buffaloes. MSU took a 38-25 halftime lead, and although the Buffaloes tried to stay on top of things in the second half, Michigan State kept their distance and secured a 72-56 win, the team’s third straight.

Ten different Spartans registered points on Monday, with Jase Richardson leading the team with 13 points.

Memphis picked up a big win for its program as it defeated the second-seeded UConn Huskies in the quarterfinals. It was a very close game throughout, with the Tigers managing to secure a 99-97 win in overtime.

The Spartans are trying to reach the finals in Maui for the first time since winning the invitational tournament in 1991. MSU hasn’t even made it to the championship game in its last four appearances. This is also Memphis’ sixth appearance on the show, its first since 2011. However, the Tigers never made it to the championship game.

This will be just the third meeting between Michigan State and Memphis, with the Spartans winning their last meeting in Detroit in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
