Season 34 is still a long way off, but fans have already been talking about a possible replacement on the jury – a cast that has remained largely unchanged since the show’s inception. The latest lineup of Judge for Dancing with the stars includes two of the show’s original judges, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inabawith six-time champions Derek Hough round off the panel. The third original juror, Len Goodman, died in 2023, making Hough’s place on the jury permanent.

Both Derek Hough and his sister Julianne – who was also the fourth juror on the jury for four seasons – replaced Goodman on the jury at various times, but Derek is now permanently at the judge’s table while sister Julianne co-hosts the show Alfonso Ribeiro’s page. However, the show had many guest judges who joined the main judges for various episodes. This list includes Billy Porter and Michael Bublé, Joey Fatone, Jessie J, Drew Lachey, Baz Luhrmann, Ricky Martin and even Cher. Of course, none of these celebrities ever had any desire to remain a judge permanently. But one of the most recent guest judges, former pro Mark Ballas, has left fans wanting a change – or at least an addition – to the status quo.

Ballas was a guest judge on Dedication Night and there were rave reviews about his brief stint as a judge. Ironically, one of the extremely positive people was Inaba himself. “Mark Ballas was a phenomenal guest judge,” said Inaba Weekly entertainment. “I hope he keeps coming back! I loved his technique demonstration and during the show I scribbled a little note for him that said, “Len would be very proud of you,” in reference to Len Goodman.

“I think Mark was touched,” Inaba added. “He asked to keep the note, which in turn touched me. Now I wish I had written it with better penmanship.”

Afterward, Ballas had nothing but good things to say about the experience. And the former pro’s fans were ready to see him replace Inaba, with comments ranging from “Please, I’m begging can we replace Carrie Ann with Mark, I hate her with everything in me” to a straight-up “Mark gotta take Carrie Ann’s “spot” on X, and the DWTS Reddit gets even tougher.

“Mark was so good as a guest judge that I literally forgot he was a guest,” said one fan on Reddit. “He was so natural and had great comments for each couple. I would love to see him return as a full-time judge one day!”

The Sun also reported in October 2024 that Inaba was at risk of being shot Dancing with the stars. “Carrie Ann will always be part of the DWTS family, but like any family, dynamics change and things change,” a source said. “She’s very popular on set, but she doesn’t have the same space as she used to. She doesn’t fit in as well as she used to.”

The insider continued: “That doesn’t necessarily mean she’s doing a bad job, but she just doesn’t fit in as well with the show or the crew as she used to.” It’s led to a lot of awkward moments on set, one of which some were captured by the cameras.”

While The Sun reported that Ballas is “the name being thrown around the most” and everyone at ABC “loves that idea,” the show also recognizes that there must be at least one woman as a judge. “The show needs another woman on the jury, it can’t be three men,” the source said.

There are also a fair number of people defending Inaba, and some agree that many people’s issues with her seem to have to do with the fact that she is a woman.

“I don’t hate Carrie Ann. “Yes, her comments are sometimes strange or crazy, but I like the dynamic she brings and the energy she has with the other judges,” another DWTS Fan wrote on Reddit. “But I just want to say, what about the energy she has tonight? She doesn’t deserve to be booed every second. … I’m seriously wondering if it’s because she’s a woman because I can’t find any other reason? She says the same things as the other judges and they get nothing in return. It feels like you’re being bullied by the audience tonight.”

Considering Inaba has been with the show since the beginning, it’s unlikely she’s going anywhere anytime soon. But if the show wants to shake things up a bit, there’s always a chance of bringing in Ballas as a fourth judge. This has been done before, and with a former professional at that. So never say never!
