Introducing the Spotify Gemini extension for Android

Introducing the Spotify Gemini extension for Android

After WhatsApp, Spotify is the second third-party Gemini extension. The Play and Search feature is similar to YouTube Music.

In recent weeks, Google has announced that it will begin rolling out five Gemini extensions. Only Google Home is widely available (via its preview program), with most users still waiting for WhatsApp, Phone, Messages and Utilities.

We don’t yet see Spotify in the extensions list on Android, the only platform where it will be available. To build:

To connect to Spotify, your Spotify account must be linked to your Google account.

  1. Ask the Gemini app to play, search or browse music on Spotify.
  2. If Spotify is not connected, you will be given the option to connect.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

The Gemini app uses “the most recently used music service” if you “have connected more than one music service and do not specify one in your request” (like @Spotify). Example prompts are:

Play music

  • Play (album name) on Spotify
  • Play (song name) by (artist name) on Spotify
  • Play my Spotify playlist with the name
  • Play music for (Activity) on Spotify

Search for music

  • Search for (artist name) songs
  • Search for the appropriate song (lyrics)
  • Find a Spotify playlist of music (genre, mood, activity).

The Spotify Gemini extension cannot create a “Spotify playlist or radio”. Other things to consider include:

  • The Spotify extension is not available in Gemini in Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or the Gemini app on iPhone.
  • Currently, the Spotify extension only works when Gemini’s language is set to English.
  • Spotify will only play the song you requested if you have a Spotify Premium subscription.
