North Shore Teacher Strike Updates for Beverly, Marblehead – NBC Boston

North Shore Teacher Strike Updates for Beverly, Marblehead – NBC Boston

Tensions are still high on the North Shore as two teachers unions there remain at odds with their school boards over contract negotiations.

The labor dispute is shaping up to be the longest teacher strike in modern Massachusetts history, and it still appears there is no solution in sight for educators in Beverly and Marblehead.

Educators from across the state gathered at the State House Tuesday morning and encouraged Gov. Maura Healey to address the ongoing strikes.

“I wanted to make it clear that this is a power issue at this point. Many of us understand these strikes as a lockout,” Andover teacher Holly Currier said. “The school board members understand this as an attempt to break the union and are speaking out accordingly. We wanted to tell the governor that without the right to strike legislation there will be more strikes.”

Healey issued a statement after a meeting with teachers union representatives calling on all parties in Beverly and Marblehead to reach an agreement immediately.

“The parties must enter into these agreements now,” she said. “And I believe that teachers should go back to school while the final details are being worked out. Our young people need to go back to school – it’s time to get this done.”

In Beverly, the strike entered its twelfth day Tuesday, making it the longest teachers’ strike in the state’s modern history. The school committee there is now refusing to negotiate because neither district has set a court-ordered deadline.

Factual proceedings are currently underway in both districts and a hearing is scheduled for next week. Unfortunately, this means thousands of students who have already missed about two weeks of school could lose even more. That’s because teachers in these districts continue to see their salaries cut.

“Taking pay cuts just before Thanksgiving and the upcoming holidays is clearly a tactic to harass educators and force the BTA to go back to work without a living wage for paras,” said Julia Brotherton, co-president of the Beverly Teachers Association .

City officials said they had no other choice.

“Nobody here wants to deprive anyone of a portion of their pay for a second, but we’re stuck,” said Beverly Mayor Mike Cahill.

The strike in Marblehead has now been going on for eleven days, but the situation is just as heated. In fact, on Sunday, two school board members were chased to their cars by angry parents and teachers.
