Christian Ilzer was head coach of Sturm Graz, but was appointed coach of Bundesliga club Hoffenheim in mid-November Jürgen Saumel has taken over the Austrians on an interim basis.

While Saumel’s side were usually considered underdogs against Dortmund, the German side were forced to field two midfielders in their back four and perhaps fans would have expected the team to take advantage of their opponents.

The Schwoazn are currently first in their domestic league with 32 points from 14 games and is five points ahead of second-placed Rapid Vienna.

Sturm Graz has only scored once in its four games Champions League Games in which they conceded six goals and they have also won four of their last six games in all competitions, losing one and drawing one.

The home team has been victorious in four of the last six home games, although it should be noted that they have lost the last six games at the Wörthersee Stadium in the Champions League.

Girona takes part in the duel on Wednesday Seventh in La Liga with 21 points after 14 gameweeks, four points away from the fourth and final place in the division’s Champions League qualifying spot.

Although the White and Reds were beaten 4-0 by PSV last time out in Europe’s premier competition, they were at least somewhat competitive until the 55th minute Arnau Martinez was sent.

The result was far from disastrous considering the Spanish team is just two points away from 24th-placed PSV, which occupies the final playoff spot in the round of 16 of the Champions League.

Boss Michel It will be worrying that his team have conceded eight goals and scored just four goals in four games in the competition, while they have a record of 20 goals scored and 18 conceded in La Liga.

Girona are in good form, having won four of their last five games and finding the net 13 times in that period.

The visitors have also won two of their last three games, but worryingly this season they have lost five and drawn two of their ten away games.

We say: Sturm Graz 1-2 Girona

Considering that Sturm Graz are still getting used to life without Ilzer, it wouldn’t be surprising if they struggled on Wednesday without the guidance of a permanent coach.

Furthermore, Girona are in good goalscoring form and could create several chances in the final third.
