Trump’s transition team says several Cabinet members have been victims of bomb threats and beatings

CNN

The Trump-Vance transition team said Wednesday that several of President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet members and administration members “faced violent, un-American threats against their lives and those who live with them” on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

“These attacks ranged from bomb threats to ‘swatting.’ In response, law enforcement and other agencies acted quickly to ensure the safety of those targeted,” Karoline Leavitt, who will serve as Trump’s press secretary, said in a statement. “President Trump and the entire transition team are grateful for their quick action.”

The FBI said in a statement that it was aware of “numerous bomb threats and attacks against new government nominees and appointees” and was working with other law enforcement agencies. “We take all potential threats seriously and, as always, encourage the public to immediately report anything they believe to be suspicious to law enforcement,” the statement continued.

President Joe Biden was briefed on the incidents on Wednesday, and a White House spokesman told CNN that the president and his administration “unequivocally condemn threats of political violence.”

“The president has been informed. The White House is in contact with federal law enforcement and the President-elect’s team and continues to closely monitor the situation. The response by federal law enforcement, along with state and local authorities, is ongoing,” the spokesperson said.

A law enforcement source said none of the targets were U.S. Secret Service protectees.

Swatting is a criminal hoax that involves falsely reporting a crime, such as a mass shooting or a bomb threat, with the intent of luring police to a specific location. At a time of highly volatile partisan politics, these types of threats targeted a broad spectrum of ideologies. For example, special counsel Jack Smith and Judge Tanya Chutkan, who oversaw the federal election subversion case against Trump, have been targets of such incidents before.

New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, chairwoman of the House GOP conference and Trump’s pick for ambassador to the United Nations, has been notified of a bomb threat against her residence, her office said in a statement Wednesday morning.

“This morning, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, her husband and their 3-year-old son were driving home from Washington to Saratoga County for Thanksgiving when they were notified of a bomb threat against their residence,” the statement said. “New York State, County and U.S. Capitol Police law enforcement responded immediately with the utmost professionalism.”

The U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement that it could not provide further details. “Whenever a member of Congress falls victim to a swatting incident, we work closely with our local and federal law enforcement partners. “To protect ongoing investigations and minimize the risk of copycats, we cannot provide any further details at this time,” the statement said.

Lee Zeldin, Trump’s nominee to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, posted on X about a pipe bomb threat against his home.

“A pipe bomb threat targeted at me and my family in our home today was sent with a pro-Palestinian message. My family and I were not at home at the time and are safe,” he said.

And Brooke Rollins, Trump’s nominee for agriculture secretary, also reported a threat “against our home and our family” and noted that her family was unharmed.

Trump’s nominee for labor secretary, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, split

Scott Turner, who was chosen to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development, said on X that he, too, faces a similar threat.

And John Ratcliffe, Trump’s nominee for CIA director, received a bomb threat against his home, according to a familiar source.

CNN has reached out to the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security for comment. A spokesman for the transition team declined to provide further details.
