An SUV stolen in New Hampshire led police on a high-speed chase through Massachusetts Monday morning before the driver finally surrendered.

The black Mercedes was traveling on highways at speeds of over 90 miles per hour, so fast that police stopped pursuing the vehicle for long stretches to avoid escalating the situation.

At one point the SUV sped past a gas station where a couple was actually watching the whole thing via livestream from our Sky Ranger news helicopter.

“We stood there and pumped gas. I thought, ‘Babe, they’re driving right by us,’ and literally in that split second he drove right by,” Briana Weir said.

Gas station surveillance footage showed more than half a dozen Massachusetts State Police cruisers following the SUV. Another passerby said he believed the SUV was traveling at least 110 miles per hour.

Massachusetts State Police said they spotted the Mercedes, reported stolen by police in Derry, New Hampshire, traveling south on Interstate 93 in Methuen shortly before 10 a.m. They began pursuing the vehicle and continued the pursuit south on Interstate 495 and Route 2.

Sky Ranger located the vehicle on Interstate 190 South in Sterling.

At one point, the SUV was seen leaving the highway and driving through the median.

State police said the chase continued at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour and ultimately decided to call off the pursuit for safety reasons, instead using the Mercedes’ built-in GPS to track the vehicle.

The State Police Air Force Squadron monitored the chase and police used stop sticks at one point to end the chase.

At around 11:18 a.m., the SUV appeared to have stopped; it was surrounded by police. According to state police, the vehicle was located in West Boylston.

The driver, identified as 40-year-old Andrew McInnes of Methuen, was arrested without issue. It is not yet clear what charges he will face.

Derry police said they first became involved when they received a call about 7:24 a.m. Monday for a report of a past burglary at Steven’s Auto Service on West Broadway. Their investigation revealed that entry was gained via a broken window on a door that allowed access to the castle. The perpetrator is said to have stolen cash and the keys to a Mercedes that was parked in the parking lot and disappeared.

At about 9:15 a.m., Derry police said they received a report that the stolen vehicle had been spotted on South Main Street. Emergency responders located the Mercedes and it immediately sped north on South Main Street. Officers briefly followed the vehicle and observed it driving recklessly as it approached a school campus.

For security reasons, the police then stopped pursuing them. The Mercedes was last seen traveling eastbound on Route 102 and an alert was sent to all New Hampshire law enforcement agencies.

Shortly after 11:15 a.m., Derry police said they were notified by Massachusetts State Police that they had stopped the Mercedes after a lengthy chase in their state and arrested a man. Police are still working to determine whether this man was responsible for the crimes in Derry and, if so, what charges might be appropriate.
